Sherborn Daffodil Trail- History In January 1971 Richard and Mary B. Saltonstall presented the town of Sherborn with a beautiful new library. A Saltonstall Memorial Committee was formed in May 1982, after the death of Richard Saltonstall. With the consent of Sally Saltonstall Willis, the concept of a daffodil trail as a living memorial took form. In 1986 the Memorial Committee passed the task to the Sherborn Garden Club and the Boggestow Garden Club, and the Sherborn Civic Beautification Fund was established. Through the years the citizens of Sherborn have supported this endeavor with their purchases and their direct contributions. To date, $22,961 has been spent on civic beautification and many, many beautiful daffodils flourish in the spring on both town and private property. Some of the projects that have been funded are the planting of daffodils along stonewalls and roadsides, referred to as the Sherborn Daffodil Trail; the improvement of Cemetery Lane and Ward Parks (Sherborn playground) area; and the planting of over forty trees at Leland Farms and eighty rosa rugosa at the Police Station. In the past several years over 600 daffodil bulbs were planted on the Sherborn town property. And in the spring of 2006 the Fund was the major sponsor of Phase 2 of the North Main Street Tree Planting and Maintenance Plan. Spring of 2007 marked the 25th anniversary of the Sherborn Daffodil Trail.
The Sherborn Daffodil Trail,
indeed, is a fitting and lasting memorial. |
